Conditions matter. These details describe a specific type of trip, not every American Airlines itinerary.

Can your dog fly in the cabin?

Yes, with conditions

One pet carrier is allowed in eligible cabins.

Your dog stays in the carrier throughout the flight. Stowage depends on aircraft and cabin. First and Business on the three-cabin A321T use a dedicated compartment; confirm your seat arrangements.

What does it cost?

$150.00 each way · per carrier

Pay at the airport.

Connections or stopovers of four hours or more can trigger additional segment fees.

Choosing a carrier

18 × 11 × 11 in · listed soft-sided dimensions

American lists these dimensions for soft-sided carriers.

The soft-sided type is recommended. Under-seat carriers must fit without excessive compression. Special cabin stowage and aircraft restrictions still apply. Confirm your flight.

Reserve a place for your dog

Add your pet through your trip on aa.com or the American app.

Complete the pet requirements and flight selection; visit the airport counter for the final check.

Minimum age

8 weeks

The domestic minimum is eight weeks.

Is there a weight limit?

Cabin-specific limit — see conditions

No universal numeric cap is established for this comparison.

American lists a 20 lb combined pet-and-carrier limit in its A321T premium-cabin guidance. Confirm your cabin.

Decisions before you book

Choose the seat before buying the carrier

Bulkhead and exit-row seats are excluded, and some premium cabins and aircraft have further restrictions. The A321T premium-cabin arrangement has a separate weight rule and storage setup. Confirm the exact aircraft and cabin; do not apply that exception to every American flight.

American — carry-on pets and aircraft restrictions

Pack one extra cabin item, not two

American permits the pet carrier plus one personal item or one eligible carry-on bag. Plan around that choice rather than arriving with a carrier, a backpack and a trolley.

American — carry-on pet baggage allowance

Use the answers for the route and operating flight you will actually take. A different cabin, aircraft or connection can change the result.
