DOMESTIC CABIN TRAVEL

Check documents for U.S. domestic travel

There is no single document checklist in this guide that applies to every domestic trip. Start with the destination, then check the airline.

Check the destination state

USDA APHIS explains that receiving states or territories set requirements for owners traveling with pets between states. These may include health certificates, vaccinations, tests or treatments. Use its state directory to find your destination’s current requirements.

Speak to your veterinarian early

Share the route, dates and destination requirements with your veterinarian as soon as your plans are known. Ask which records, examinations or certificates apply and when they must be completed. Do not assume a deadline from a previous trip still applies.

Ask the airline separately

Ask the operating airline what it requires for your dog, route and cabin, including the format and timing of any paperwork. A pet reservation does not by itself confirm that destination requirements have been met.

Keep a dated checklist

For every required document, note who issues it, the applicable dates and how it must be presented. Keep the relevant official links and the date you checked them. Recheck if the destination, travel dates or operating airline changes.

Know this guide’s boundary

This page is a planning workflow for trips within the contiguous United States. It does not establish eligibility for Hawaii, territories, international travel or return from abroad. Use the relevant destination authorities for those journeys.

Apply this to your airline

Check destination documents separately from airline requirements. These guides help you find the airline’s official source for your planned flight.

Your route and document record

Work from the destination authority and airline separately. Ask your veterinarian about the necessary appointments and document timing; this sheet does not determine medical or legal eligibility.

These are your private planning notes, not an airline approval. Entries are not sent to us or saved by this site. Print or save to PDF before leaving the page; your browser may restore form values locally.

Add only requirements confirmed for your route. A blank entry does not mean a document is unnecessary. Do not enter identity-document numbers.

Sources and scope

Planning steps and worksheets are our organization of the task, not official forms or approval. Airline-specific examples remain specific to that airline. Research, drafting and source checks are AI-assisted. The initial versions received editorial approval on October 1, 2026; that does not imply independent human verification of later additions. A new worksheet or partial source check does not advance the full-guide check date. Official requirements can change.
