Before committing to the itinerary
Identify the airline operating each flight, then check its pet policy, available pet spaces, cabin restrictions and booking process. Ask how a connection or aircraft change affects your plans. Our airline guides help you organize those questions.
Before choosing a carrier
Write down your dog and carrier measurements. Read the airline’s fit requirements and confirm the intended flight. Give yourself time to assess the setup at home and discuss any welfare concerns with your veterinarian.
Prepare a travel folder
Keep the pet reservation details, airline responses and any required documents together. Check destination requirements separately from airline requirements using the documents guide. Make an offline copy of the details you will need at the airport.
Plan the airport visit
Check the airline’s arrival and check-in instructions, airport layout and pet-relief locations in advance. For example, Delta directs cabin-pet customers to its Special Service Counter and asks them to allow extra check-in time. Follow the screening officers’ instructions at security.
At the security checkpoint
At a TSA checkpoint, take your dog out of the carrier as directed and keep control of it. Only the empty carrier goes through the X-ray machine; never send your dog through it. Follow the officer’s instructions for carrying or leashing your dog through screening. If you are concerned your dog may escape, tell an officer before opening the carrier and ask about a controlled or private screening arrangement. Put your dog safely back in the carrier after screening.
Recheck before leaving
Review the operating airline, flight and cabin, pet reservation, carrier and documents. If the itinerary changes, ask the airline to reconfirm your pet’s arrangements. Keep a practical alternative in mind if the planned journey cannot go ahead.
Apply this to your airline
Before booking, open your operating airline’s guide and work through its carrier and reservation rules.

Planning steps and worksheets are our organization of the task, not official forms or approval. Airline-specific examples remain specific to that airline. Research, drafting and source checks are AI-assisted. The initial versions received editorial approval on October 1, 2026; that does not imply independent human verification of later additions. A new worksheet or partial source check does not advance the full-guide check date. Official requirements can change.
